Getting To DHR Links

Travel to DHR by Road

To Siliguri

Siliguri is the gateway to Assam and the other North East states of India, as well as Sikkim and Bhutan.

National Highway NH-34 links Kolkata to Siliguri.

National Highways NH-2, NH-30 and NH-31 link New Delhi, Kanpur, Varanasi and Patna to Siliguri.

Please note that National Highways are to be renumbered.

It is recommended that foreign tourists to India should not rent self-drive cars but find a hire package including a driver.

Siliguri or Bagdogra Airport to Darjeeling

The direct route from both Siliguri and Bagdogra Airport to Kurseong and Darjeeling is via the Rohini Road, on which a nominal toll charge is payable. Allow approximately 3 hours (plus stops) to and from Darjeeling.

The older Hill Cart Road (NH-55), which parallels DHR and is more scenic at the lower end, takes at least 1 hour longer and is in poor repair around Rongtong, Tindharia and Paglajhora. It is often closed in these areas following landslips during the monsoon season.

An alternative route to Kurseong is via the narrow Pankabari Road.

Alternative routes to Ghum and Darjeeling are via either Mirik or the Teesta Valley (NH-31A)

By bus and taxi

Taxis, fixed route autorickshaws and cycle rickshaws connect New Jalpaiguri Station with Siliguri town centre and Siliguri Junction station. Shared taxis for Kurseong and Darjeeling depart from outside New Jalpaiguri station – enquire at the Siliguri Police Pre-Paid Taxi Office.

North Bengal State Transport buses depart from Siliguri Bus Station, located next to Siliguri Junction station. Shared taxis for Kurseong and Darjeeling depart from outside the Bus Station. Buses for Sikkim depart from the Sikkim Nationalised Transport Company depot on the opposite side of the main road.

Road Safety

All mountain roads have dangers, and the Hill Cart Road (NH-55) paralleling DHR from Siliguri to Darjeeling is no exception, but it well worth looking out for the warning signs put up by the Public Works Department (PWD).
