“Darjeeling Mail” from New Jalpaiguri to Kurseong and Darjeeling
Since the early days of DHR, the principal train has been the “Darjeeling Mail” connecting with the Broad Gauge train of the same name from Kolkata (Sealdah). When Siliguri was only a village and there was no electronic communication, DHR ensured that mail and newspapers leaving Calcutta in the early evening would reach Darjeeling soon after midday the next day. Until the 1980s, the “Darjeeling Mail” operated in two or three portions and conveyed mail vans in which the post could be sorted for each town en-route.
Today the “Darjeeling Mail” is the only regular way of viewing the beautiful unspoilt scenery from Sukna up to Kurseong by train. The First Class coaches have all been upgraded to ensure a comfortable and memorable journey behind one of our NDM6 Class diesel locos.
One AC coach is introduced in the train composition from 11th April 2018. Now the composition is two First Class and one AC.
Seats on these trains can be booked on-line at http://www.irctc.co.in or in person at Indian Railways computerised reservation counters nationwide or at DHR stations at Darjeeling, Ghum, Kurseong, New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri Junction.
